Description |
Nederlands: Ganvié is midden in een zoutwatermeer gebouwd en ligt aan de zuidkust van Benin. Het paalwoningendorp werd gebouwd als reactie op de aanvallen van Fon krijgers op naburige gemeenschappen in de 16e eeuw. De Dan-Homey koning probeerde via de slavenhandel zijn rijkdom te vergroten en liet zijn krijgers het achterland uitkammen op zoek naar slaven. Water vormde echter een serieus obstakel voor de krijgers, zij waren gebonden aan traditionele wetten waarin het betreden van water 'taboe' was. Vluchtelingen besloten daarop hen voortaan uit de weg te gaan door een dorp midden in de lagune te bouwen, en met succes. Zo ontstond het volk van de Tofinu, 'mensen gedragen door het water'.
De bescherming van het water heeft er toe bijgedragen dat de bevolking tegenwoordig enkele tienduizenden zielen telt. In het dorp wordt alles via het water gedaan. Er zijn nauwelijks bruggen en kleine bootjes ('pirogues') varen af en aan tussen de huizen. |
