Nederlands: In de cylindrische wand zijn boven elkaar drie rijen van elk twaalf koppen uitgesneden. De mensenhoofden hebben bolle ogen, geopende mond met tanden en afstaande oren. Ze zijn aan elkaar bevestigd door de afstaande oren en houtsteeltjes. De onderste rij hoofden rust op een massieve ronde rand. De rode kleur hier en daar komt van het camwood.
Het uiterlijk van de zetel staat in verband met de sociale status van de bezitter. Alleen de Fon, z'n familieleden en enkele notabelen hebben zulke bewerkte zetels. Ze zijn nooit geverfd, maar wel ingewreven met camwoodpoeder (o.a. afweermiddel tegen termieten). Zetels van vroegere Fon zijn soms bij rituele ceremoniën aanwezig. Informatie via H. Leyten: Een stoel met mensenhoofden is van een koning, alleen hij mag letterlijk 'op' mensen zitten, andere hooggeplaatsten mogen op dieren zitten (zie opmerking 2). Volgens Northern zou het wijdverspreide gebruik van mensenhoofden op voorwerpen als pijpen, sieraden, staven, drinkhoorns en stoelen terug te voeren zijn op het koppensnellen dat in Bamum in de 19de eeuw gebruikelijk was in oorlogvoering. Dit was niet het geval in de Grasslands. Zij stelt dat rijen mensenhoofden eerder verwijzen naar de kracht en steun van het volk van de koning, waarop hij metaforisch zit (1984:42). Deze zetel is het bezit geweest van een notabele te Bandjun die op ongeveer 1 km afstand van de chefferie woont. De notabele die deze zetel bezat is dezelfde als die van het masker nummer 3413-3. |
