Nederlands: Foto. De klassieke plantagestreek op Sumatra was te vinden in Deli, onderdeel van het Gouvernement van Sumatra's Oostkust. Dit was het hart van wat men al gauw 'het Cultuurgebied' ging noemen, het gebied waar de cultures voor de buitenlandse markt verbouwd werden. Het begin van de Westerse ondernemingen kan men terugvoeren op het bezoek van Jacobus Nienhuys in 1863 aan Deli. Nienhuys, de zoon van een Amsterdamse makelaar in tabak, kreeg een stuk grond in erfpacht van de Sultan van Deli en constateerde dat de aldaar verbouwde tabak van goede kwaliteit was. Dit was zowel het begin van de grootschalige tabakscultuur voor de export in deze streek en van de Deli Maatschappij. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
