English: Batik-works, the women also sleep in this room.
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Het maken van batik werd zowel op kleine als op grote schaal bedreven. Rond 1650 waren er in het paleis van de Vorst van Mataram (Midden-Java) grote groepen vrouwen met batik bezig, maar die productie zal wel niet voor de markt bedoeld geweest zijn. In de 19e eeuw bestonden er gespecialiseerde ateliers in Solo, Jogja, Batavia, Buitenzorg en Cheribon. Rond 1900 werd het werk, vooral door Chinese ondernemers, vaak uitbesteed aan Javaanse arbeidsters die het in thuisarbeid uitvoerden. De arbeidsomstandigheden van de batiksters waren vaak verre van ideaal. De hier afgedrukte foto, afkomstig van het Kantoor van de Arbeid, had oorspronkelijk als bijschrift: "temidden van de rommel slapen de batiksters op den kalen grond." (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
