Nederlands: Repronegatief. De petroleumindustrie was zowel onderdeel van de primaire sector (in dit geval mijnbouw) als van de secundaire (nijverheid). De in 1890 opgerichte 'Koninklijke' begon haar boringen te Telaga Said in het sultanaat Langkat. In 1892 begon de raffinage van de daar aangeboorde olie te Pangkalan Brandan, niet ver van Telaga Said gelegen aan de Babalan rivier. De rivier mondde uit in Straat Malakka, zodat uitvoer makkelijk was. In 1897 kwam de installatie gereed in het 12 km verderop aan de Aroebaai gelegen Pangkalan Soesoe. Hier kwamen tankers de daar geproduceerde lampolie (kerosine), aanvankelijk belangrijker dan de benzine, in bulk ophalen. Er werden hier ook blikken mee gevuld. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
