Nederlands: Negatief. De niet-specialist zal bij Indonesische textiel al gauw aan batik denken. Dat gold vermoedelijk ook voor de vele Nederlanders die voor enige tijd naar 'de Oost' gingen. Batik is een vooral Javaanse kunstvorm en veel Nederlanders kwamen nu eenmaal niet veel verder dan Java. Er is echter nog een manier van textiel verven die in de Archipel veel voorkomt, namelijk ikat. Bij ikat gaat, in tegenstelling tot batik, het verven van de draden aan het weven vooraf. Men vindt het procédé toegepast in vele delen van de Archipel, met name op de Kleine Soenda Eilanden. De weefsels zijn vaak van katoen, net als bij batik, maar ook andere stoffen komen voor. (P.
