Nederlands: Dia uit een serie foto's die is gemaakt bij de aankoop van een aantal suikerwerkfiguren en mallen om suikerwerkfiguren in te vervaardigen (4635-18*/63).
Suikerwerkfiguren worden aan kinderen kado gegeven bij de viering van mawlid an-nabi. Op deze dag wordt de verjaardag van de profeet Mohammed gevierd. Mawlid an-nabi wordt in Cairo gevierd met een kermis, optochten en soefi-ceremonies. De viering komt overeen met de mawlids van islamitische en Koptische heiligen in Egypte. De suikerwerkfiguren zijn het hele jaar door verkrijgbaar, maar worden vooral voor mawlid an-nabi verkocht. Ouders geven de suikerwerkfiguren kado aan hun kinderen. De traditionele verdeling was dat de jongens een boot kregen en de meisjes een pop. Andere figuren waren zowel voor jongens als meisjes bedoeld. Tegenwoordig is deze traditionele verdeling enigszins losgelaten. |
