Nederlands: Foto. De Molukken waren in de 17e en 18e eeuw van groot belang voor de VOC vanwege de specerijen die er werden verbouwd en geexporteerd. In de 19e eeuw was dat niet meer het geval. Toen het gouvernement in 1864 het specerijmonopolie afschafte, zorgde dat even voor een economische opleving, maar al na enige decennia was dit door overproductie weer afgelopen. Wel zorgde de Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) voor goede en regelmatige verbindingen tussen de eilanden en de rest van de Archipel. Door de hoge vrachtprijzen was dit echter wel van weinig betekenis voor potentiële exporteurs. Europese ondernemers hadden geringe belangstelling, omdat arbeid op de dunbevolkte eilanden schaars was.
