Nederlands: Negatief. Naast de teelt van rijst, maïs, wortels en knollen op hun akkers, hadden veel Sumatraanse boeren (en zelfs veel niet-boeren) een tuin of erf tot hun beschikking waar ook nog van alles op groeide. Daarbij moet niet zo zeer aan een Hollandse tuin met gras, bloemen en struiken gedacht worden, als wel aan een moestuin met groenten en daarnaast wat bomen. Hoewel geen echte boom, zal de banaan (pisang) op de meeste erven niet ontbroken hebben. In feite is de banaan meer een leverancier van koolhydraten (zoals rijst, etc.) dan een vrucht. Veel producten van het erf waren voor de handel bedoeld, en wel voor de periodieke markten (tiga) die in dit deel van het eiland gevonden werden. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
