English: Toba Batak village view with sarcophagus, Hutaraja
Nederlands: Negatief. Het waren vooral de Toba- en de Karo-Bataks die fraaie en grote adathuizen bouwden, omdat zij rijstbouw op permanente akkers bedreven en dus in permanente dorpen woonden. De andere Batak groepen bedreven meer 'zwerflandbouw'. Ze moesten daarom regelmatig hun dorp verlaten en ergens weer opbouwen en bouwden dus ook geen erg degelijke huizen. Dorpen waren overigens vaak verdedigbaar vanwege de vele conflicten tussen de dorpen onderling. Het type huizen op de foto is nog niet verdwenen, maar de dakbedekking, op de foto van atap, is tegenwoordig van zink. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Toba Batak dorpsgezicht met sarcofaag, Hoetaradja |
