Nederlands: Foto. Vanaf ongeveer 1900 werd het steeds gebruikelijker voor jonge Europese vrouwen om naar 'de Oost' te gaan. Nog niet zo lang daarvoor werd dit door velen als ongewenst beschouwd vanwege de daar heersende zeden, waarvan jonge, welopgevoede Europese vrouwen zouden gaan blozen. Toen echter de plantersmaatschappij zich langzaam maar zeker aanpaste, waarbij alleen al de aanwezigheid van meer Europese vrouwen een rol speelde, was een vertrek naar de Oost als vrouw van een administrateur of assistent niet meer bedenkelijk. Velen trouwden 'met de handschoen', dat wil zeggen dat ze trouwden met een afwezige man, die al in Indië zat en die ze vervolgens achterna reisden. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
