Nederlands: Negatief. Geiten en schapen hebben nooit veel de aandacht getrokken van de koloniale bestuursambtenaren. Ook toeristen en andere reizigers maakten er zelden melding van en foto's werden er nauwelijks van genomen. Toch waren beide soorten kleinvee niet onbelangrijk. Dit gold voor Java (en geldt nu nog sterker) en is ook op Sumatra van toepassing. Vooral in de Bataklanden, met name in de gebieden van de Toba- en de Karo-Bataks, waren geiten en schapen niet ongebruikelijk, vermoedelijk omdat het een streek was waar grote grasvlakten al in de 19e eeuw de plaats van de bossen hadden ingenomen.
