Nederlands: De huidige Marokkaanse vlag is in 1915 ontworpen en werd bij de onafhankelijkheid in 1956 als officiële landsvlag aangenomen. Vóór 1915 was de vlag helemaal rood zonder de vervlochten vijfpuntige ster. Deze laatste is later toegevoegd op aanbeveling van de Franse protectoraat om de Marokkaanse vlag (veldteken) te onderscheiden van andere rode vlaggen. Men interpreteert soms de vijfpuntige ster als representatie van de vijf zuilen van de islam.
De oorspronkelijke kleur van de Marokkaanse vlag was wit, maar sinds het aantreden van het huidige Alawide vorstenhuis (17e eeuw) heeft men de witte kleur vervangen door rood. Het rood in de vlag symboliseert de afstamming van de koninklijke familie (Alawiden) van de profeet Mohammed via diens dochter Fatima. Deze familielijn (waaronder de Hashemieten) gebruikt rood als zijn symbool. Het groen van de ster verwijst naar de kleur van de islam. |
