Nederlands: Foto. In 1940 was nog 56% van het oppervlak van Celebes (nu Sulawesi) bedekt met bos. Dat was net iets minder dan Sumatra (61%), maar veel meer dan Java (24%). Vooral Midden-Celebes, het gebied van de 'heidense' Toradja's, was nog zwaar bebost. Het minste bos was te vinden in Zuidwest-Celebes, het gebied van de Makassaren en Boeginezen. Toch waren zelfs daar nog wel tamelijk ongerepte plekken te vinden, vooral in de meer bergachtige gebieden. Om dat zo te houden werd in 1919 het natuurmonument Bantimoeroeng bij gouvernementsbesluit in het leven geroepen. Het betrof hier een karstgebergte bij Maros, bekend als paradijs voor vlinderliefhebbers. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Rivierlandschap bij de rotsen in de omgeving van Maros.
