English: Portrait of civil servant J. Jongejans and a local ruler of the Minangkabau
Nederlands: Foto. Onder de Resident stonden de Assistent-Residenten, meestal tevens hoofd van een Afdeling. Solok was de hoofdplaats van een van de Afdelingen van de Residentie Sumatra's Westkust, eveneens Solok geheten. De hoogste inheemse ambtenaar was vanaf ca. 1915 een districtshoofd met de titel demang. Voor de bestuurlijke reorganisatie was er in dit gebied doorgaans sprake van bestuur door wat de Nederlanders 'volkshoofden' noemden, een soort erfelijke ambtsadel. De Residentie van Sumatra's Westkust was het gebied van de Minangkabau (of Minangkabauers), een etnische groep met een zeker faam onder antropologen vanwege hun matrilineaire verwantschapssysteem (en hun fraaie huizen).
