English: A plantation of the NILS near Bahbaju with young coffee trees on cleared land
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Naast ontginningen voor de bevolkingslandbouw en ontbossing door houtkap voor de export van hout, was er nog sprake van houtkap voor de houtskoolbranderijen of panglongs en ontbossing voor de gambircultuur, beide grotendeels in handen van Chinezen. Van groter belang als we naar de omvang van de ontbossing kijken, waren de ontginningen in het Gouvernement Sumatra's Oostkust ten bate van de grote Westerse landbouwondernemingen die rond 1870 begonnen. Het ging hier aanvankelijk vooral om tabak, later ook om rubber en koffie. Voor deze ondernemingen werd in hoog tempo primair bos gekapt. Dat werd toen gezien als onderdeel van de beschavingsmissie, waarbij 'woeste gronden' 'in cultuur' gebracht werden. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
