Nederlands: Volgens de verzamelaar, de heer L.S. Anema, was de inheemse naam van het masker 'Tombela' en werd het gebruikt bij de begrafenis van prinsen.
De literatuur stelt echter dat het masker gebruikt wordt bij initiatieceremoniën door leden van het geheime Mukanda of Nkanda genootschap. Het politieke beleid berust bij de leden van dit genootschap die een training, initiatie in de 'woudschool' (Nkanda) hebben doorlopen. De afsluiting van deze periode en de daarmee verbonden besnijdenis gaat met veel feestelijkheden gepaard. De leden van het genootschap voeren maskerdansen (tudansi) op voor de verzamelde bevolking. Na afloop worden de maskers verzameld en beoordeeld. De maker van het mooiste masker krijgt de eretitel: Kimvumbu. Deze titel kan per dorp slechts aan één persoon tegelijk toegekend worden. |
