English: Male and female Balinese priests performing a ceremony
Nederlands: Negatief. Naast de dansen en de hanengevechten, het strand en de mooie mannen en vrouwen, hebben de Balinese tempels vanaf het begin van de 20e eeuw toeristen naar het eiland gelokt. Het Hindoeïsme van Bali was zo gezichtsbepalend voor het eiland dat de koloniale staat het optreden van zending en missie aldaar verbood. Dat leidde tot heftige polemieken in de pers. Tempels en hun priesters speelden een belangrijke rol bij het beheer van de vele irrigatiewerken die Bali rijk is. Elke irrigatievereniging (subak) was verplicht de bij de subak behorende tempels te onderhouden. Er waren ook 'staatstempels'. Pedanda's zijn priesters van het hoogste hiërarchische niveau. (P.
