Nederlands: Repronegatief. Balikpapan was met bijna 30.000 inwoners in 1930 de derde stad van 'Nederlands' Borneo. Balikpapan was, in tegenstelling tot Bandjermasin, een zeer jonge stad, die in de 20e eeuw bijzonder snel groeide. De stad was in feite een creatie van de olie-industrie. In dit geval was dat de BPM (Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij), de productiefirma van 'Koninklijke'/Shell. Het was een dorpje toen daar in 1898 de constructie begon van een petroleumraffinaderij die op dat moment een van de grootste ter wereld was. Verder waren er fabrieken voor onder meer paraffine, kaarsen, smeerolie, zwavelzuur en salpeterzuur. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Lading lossen te Balikpapan |
