Nederlands: Dit beeld is een 'nkisi', een krachtbeeld met spiegel en een halfvergaan medicijnenbundel om de hals.
De meeste Kongo objecten vallen in deze categorie. Minkisi (meervoud voor 'nkisi') zijn houders van magische substanties en worden ook omschreven als graven. Zo kan een beeld relikwieën van voorouders bevatten, of klei van de begraafplaats, en magische medicijnen, 'bilongo'. Deze materialen geven het beeld bovennatuurlijke krachten. Deze zijn via het beeld te gebruiken door een 'banganga', een ritueel specialist. 'Minkisi' zijn tevens de rituelen die uitgevoerd worden voor genezing, maar ook voor succes in de jacht, handel en vruchtbaarheid. De rituelen gaan gepaard met enerverende muziek en dans. Sommige 'nkisi' hebben spiegels, waarmee ze heksen en andere kwaadwilligen van alle kanten kunnen zien aankomen; ze functioneren als een soort kompas dat de banganga vertelt waar het kwaad vandaan komt. Tijdens de koloniale periode speelden minkisi een belangrijke rol bij het tegenstand bieden aan de overheerser. Europese missionarissen zagen ze als heidense attributen en lieten ze vernietigen of stuurden ze naar huis als tekens van afgoderij. Europese machthebbers gebruikten de beelden als bewijsstukken van politieke tegenstand. Ondanks dit alles worden minkisi tegenwoordig nog steeds gebruikt in een of andere vorm (Visona, 2000:366). |
