Nederlands: Lokanga is de benaming voor een groep niet direct aan elkaar verwante instrumenten, die als een viool worden bespeeld.
Enkele voorbeelden zijn: - De lokanga antandroy die uit het zuiden van Madagaskar komt en werd gebruikt om liederen (klaagzang, wiegelied en ceremoniële liederen) te begeleiden. De drie of vier snaren die tegenwoordig van metaal zijn werden vroeger van dierlijk of plantaardig materiaal gemaakt. - De lokanga bara is vergelijkbaar met de Europese viool en werd voornamelijk gebruikt door de Bara bij ceremoniële geestuitdrijvingen. - Omdat de lokanga bazaha door Europese missionarissen werd beschouwd als een instrument van de duivel drongen ze er op aan het instrument te verbranden. Het instrument wordt nu eigenlijk alleen nog aan getroffen in Imerina (Noord Madagaskar) waar het een belangrijke rol speelt in traditionele ensembles. - De lokanga voatavo komt ook oorspronkelijk uit Imerina en werd bespeeld door manlijke slaven. Tegenwoordig wordt dit instrument alleen nog gemaakt voor de toeristenmarkt en lijkt uiterlijk nog maar weinig op het originele instrument. |
