Nederlands: De Ashanti danken hun opkomst en rijkdom aan de exploitatie van enorme goudbronnen.
Stofgoud werd volop gebruikt in de handel met buitenstaanders, voor het maken van regalia, voor persoonlijke versiering en als intern ruilmiddel bij de Akan-volken. Tot het begin van de 18e eeuw was stofgoud het enige ruilmiddel bij de Asante. Stofgoud werd gebruikt door elke ondernemer, van straathandelaren tot nationale ondernemingen. Het goud werd niet gebruikt voor de vervaardiging van goudgewichten. Hiervoor werden koperlegeringen gebruikt die via de à cire perdue methoden tot gewichtjes werden gevormd. Deze werden tot aan het eind van de 19e eeuw gebruikt en elke handelaar had een eigen set van gewichtjes, bewaardoosjes, lepels en weegschaal. De hoeveelheid daarvan was afhankelijk van zijn positie en welvaart (McLeod, 1981:124). Hoewel goud tegenwoordig is vervangen door een Westerse vorm van ruilmiddel, bevinden dergelijke gewichtjes, kleine weegschalen, goudstofdoosjes en scheplepeltjes zich nog in de huizen van mensen of in de schatkamers van koningen en hoofdmannen. |
