Nederlands: Negatief. Onder de VOC was het bekeren van de bevolking van de Indische Archipel niet iets waar de Heren XVII of de 'Hoge Regering' te Batavia zich druk over maakten. Er werd vooral geprobeerd om die bewoners van de Molukken, die door de Portugezen tot het katholicisme bekeerd waren, tot het protestantisme over te halen of althans ze ervan te weerhouden moslim te worden. Protestantse kerken waren er er wel in enkele grote steden zoals Batavia, maar daarbuiten niet. In de 19e eeuw komen er in Nederland diverse zendingsgenootschappen die in Indië actief waren, teneinde moslims en 'heidenen' (zij die noch moslim noch christen zijn) te bekeren. Later in de 19e eeuw komt daar ook de RK missie bij. Op Java werden zending en missie relatief laat actief, omdat de overheid bang was voor protesten van islamitische kant. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
