Nederlands: Er bestaan meerdere opinies over de herkomst en gebruik van het masker. Volgens Van Geluwe wordt het masker gebruikt in het Bwadi (Buadi) genootschap en treedt het samen met het Kubamasker op tijdens het geheime initiatieritueel en de begrafenis van geinitieerde mannen. Binkley, verbonden aan het Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art te Kansas City, heeft ter plekke onderzoek gedaan en deelde mee dat dit masker optreedt tijdens initiatie van mannen samen met een ander raffia masker genaamd Kamakengu. Het wordt gebruikt door de noordelijke Kete en zuidelijke Bushoong (zuidelijke Kuba volkeren) maar men treft het ook wel aan in Cwa (pygmee) dorpen in het oostelijk Kuba gebied.
In 'African Arts', artikel van Petridis, staat een soortgelijk masker afgebeeld uit de Basel-collectie, verzameld door Hans Himmelheber. De 'munyinga' heerst over de hierarchie van maskers die een centrale rol spelen in de initatie van jongens (buadi, noordelijke Kete; nkaan, zuidelijke Bushoong). |
