Nederlands: De figuur wordt gebruikt door een priesteres van het Yassi-genootschap, dat zich bezighoudt met de behandeling van ziekten. Zij gebruikt de vrouwenfiguur als medium waardoor de geesten uitsluitsel geven omtrent genezing van ziekten. Dit type figuren, altijd vrouwelijk, staan in het heiligdom van het vrouwengenootschap. Ze staan in een houten schaal waarin tijdens een ceremonie medicijn wordt geplaatst.
Voordat de figuur iets gevraagd wordt, wordt deze gezalfd en ingewreven met een voor het genootschap belangrijk medicijn. Hierdoor verkrijgt de figuur een magische kracht. Een priesteres van de tweede rang ((Kjersmeier 1967), Yamana genoemd en gekleed in een wit gewaad, plaatst de figuur naast de geheime medicijnen, waarna zij in trance gaat. Na de trance wordt de figuur opnieuw gezalfd en met een medicijn ingewreven. De priesteres houdt de figuur in beide handen met de armen gestrekt voor zich, ze kijkt de figuur recht in het gezicht. Tijdens de dans van de Yamana worden uit de bewegingen van de figuur conclusies getrokken omtrent het positieve, dan wel negatieve ziekteverloop van de patient. De figuur beantwoord de vragen van de priesteres door bevestigend te knikken (voorover buigen). Als de figuur onbeweeglijk blijft is het antwoord negatief. De figuur wordt ook geraadpleegd om een doodsoorzaak vast te stellen. |
