Nederlands: In Phillips (1996:447) staat een soortgelijk beeld met herkomst Zuidoost-Ivoorkust. De bolle ledematen zijn typerend, evenals de houding van de handen. Het gebruik is meervoudig; zo kan het beeld gebruikt zijn door een ritueel specialist bij het communiceren met de andere wereld, of door hem voorgeschreven aan een patiënt ter genezing. Het kan ook zijn bedoeld als de 'liefdesgeest' van een man, of zijn uitgestald bij bepaalde traditionele dansen. Dergelijke beelden dienen dus meerdere doeleinden.
Een precieze determinatie van dergelijke beelden lijkt onmogelijk omdat er geen herkenbare stijl is van deze regio binnen Ivoorkust. De mensen die de beelden maken behoren niet tot een groep professionele artiesten, maar zijn individuen die redelijk kunnen beeldhouwen (Holas, 1969:190). In Leuzinger staat een identiek beeld toegeschreven aan Ebrié, een culturele groep vlakbij de Alagya, aan wie onderhavig beeld is toegeschreven (1970:117). In Visona (2000:215) staat een ander soortgelijk Ebrie beeld, waarvan de functie ook niet eenduidig is. Het kan de zetel van een bovennaturlijke macht geweest zijn zoals een bosgeest, een bovennatuurlijke echtgenote of de helper van een ritueel specialist, maar het kan ook een meer seculiere functie gehad hebben als prijs voor een goed danser. in Tribal Sculpture is de precieze herkomst van een gelijkend beel wederom onbekend, maar zeker is dat het afkomstig is van een zogenaamde 'lagoon artist', waarmee de zuideljike delen van Ivoorkust worden bedoeld. Ze worden er gebruikt als verbeelding van een spirituele wederhelft. Dit zijn geesten die men achterlaat in de bovenwereld als men geboren wordt. Deze geesten hebben aandacht nodig en zullen bij gebrek daaraan impotentie, onvruchtbaarheid of ander ongeluk veroorzaken. Het beeld diende in ieder geval als verblijfplaats voor een geest. Die geest kon worden aangeroepen door een religieus specialist waarmee hij communiceerde met de andere wereld. |
