Nederlands: De figuren die voorouders (of geesten) moeten voorstellen worden gewoonlijk Brolo Bian of Brolo genoemd in het geval van een mannelijke figuur en Brolo Bla in het geval van een vrouwelijke figuur.
Kort gezegd is de essentiële functie van dergelijke rituele voorwerpen het in materiële zin weergeven van de heilzame tegenwoordigheid van de overledenen of van diegenen die ver weg en onbereikbaar zijn. De herinneringsbeeldjes van de Baulé worden in het algemeen met de naam Waka Sona aangeduid, hetgeen betekent: mensen of figuren van hout (zie Holas, 1968: 80). Dit soort beelden kunnen uiteenlopende rollen vervullen in de gemeenschap. De geschreven bronnen verschaffen echter maar weinig precieze en gelijkluidende informatie, zodat het zeer moeilijk blijft om van museumstukken zonder bijgeleverde achtergrondinformatie de juiste functie te achterhalen. |
