Nederlands: Het masker is verzameld door Hans Himmelheber tijdens zijn expeditie naar de Atutu van Ivoorkust in de eerste helft van 1933. Hij bezoekt als eerste de zuidelijke Baule, de Atutu en later ook de noordelijke Baule en hun buren, de noordoostelijke Guro.
Hij interviewt een groot aantal houtsnijders, waaronder belangrijke meesters. Hij stelt vragen omtrent de beroepskeuze, opleiding en uitoefening. Vragen over de wijze van vervaardiging, het materiaal en de gebruikte technieken. Tot slot wil hij hun houding ten opzichte van hun eigen werk weten. Hierbinnen zijn de functie van een sculptuur alsook de vraag naar de creativiteit van de maker en de interpretatie van een object samengevat. Uit dit onderzoek is een boekje ontstaan dat in februari 1934 aan de Universiteit Tübingen als dissertatie werd geaccepteerd en het volgende jaar als boek uitgegeven werd. In dit boek getiteld 'Negerkünstler - ethnographische Studien über den Schnitzkünstler bei den Stämmen der Atutu und Guro im Innern der Elfenbeinküste, Ergebnisse einer Forschungsexpedition' wordt voor het eerst het verhaal achter Afrikaanse objecten vertelt en komt men te weten wie de mensen zijn die deze objecten maken en gebruiken. Helaas is in dit boek niets over de functie van het masker opgenomen, maar volgens de oude informatie werd het vermoedelijk gebruikt rondom de initiatie (besnijdenis) van jongens wanneer zij afgezonderd zijn in het woud. Het masker zou een bosgod kunnen zijn. Een soortgelijk exemplaar dat gelijktijdig met dit masker werd verzameld is door Susan Vogel beschreven als een 'portrait mask' (1997: 168), waarvoor iemand uit de omgeving van de maker model heeft gestaan. |
