Nederlands: Repronegatief. Sawahs zijn permanente bouwlanden omgeven door een dijkje waardoor er water op kan blijven staan. Dat kan regenwater of irrigatiewater zijn. Sawahs liggen over het algemeen op sterk of zwak glooiend terrein, zodat de gronden geterrasseerd en de aldus ontstane akkers waterpas gemaakt moeten worden. Als het enigszins kon, gebruikte de landbouwer voor het ploegen en eggen karbouwen. Als de vakken echter te smal waren (vooral bij steile hellingen) was dat niet mogelijk. De aanleg van sawahs is een zeer arbeidsintensief proces, waar tegenover staat dat de opbrengsten per eenheid grond hoog zijn en er niet vaak misoogsten voorkomen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
