English: Drying gambir cubes on racks
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Als het over Chinezen in Indië gaat, gebeurt dat meestal in het kader van de handel. Toch waren de Chinezen ook in ander bedrijfstakken vertegenwoordigd. Dat gold bijvoorbeeld voor de teelt en de verwerking van gambir in de Residentie Riouw en Onderhorigheden wat sinds 1800 zo goed als helemaal in Chinese handen was. Gambir was een onderdeel van de sirihpruim (samen met sirih, pinang en kalk) terwijl het bovendien, vanwege het hoge tanninegehalte, voor het looien van leer gebruikt werd. Bijna de hele gambirproductie van de Indische Archipel was van Sumatra afkomstig. In sommige delen van Riouw (en trouwens ook op het eiland Singapore) was gambir min of meer een monocultuur. (P.
