Java stond en staat bekend om zijn goud- en zilversmeden. Vroeger zorgde de vraag van de Midden-Javaanse hoven voor veel werk, nu zijn dat de toeristen. Ook het bewerken van koper was een belangrijke ambachtelijke activiteit. Er moet een onderscheid gemaakt worden tussen het gieten en het smeden van koper. De geelkoperen instrumenten van de gamelan worden gegoten, maar ook bijvoorbeeld sirihdozen, presenteerbladen en ringen, waarbij de gegoten vorm veelal als eindbewerking 'geciseleerd' wordt. Ook dit gebeurt weer voornamelijk op Midden-Java. Het eigenlijke kopersmeden gebeurde met roodkoper, vooral voor de productie van Javaans vaatwerk. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Het ciseleren van koper |
