Nederlands: Foto. Sumatra telde voor 1900 weinig goede wegen, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat er helemaal geen wegen waren. In het westelijk deel van het eiland waren de wegen de enige verbindingen tussen het gebergte en de smalle kuststrook, maar tot ver in de 19e eeuw waren dit veelal korte weggedeeltes die ook nog slecht van kwaliteit waren. Het aantal wegen nam gedurende die eeuw wel toe, omdat het koloniaal bewind zich steeds verder in het binnenland liet gelden, bijvoorbeeld gedurende de Padri Oorlog en de Atjeh Oorlog. Ook economische expansie (plantages, mijnbouw) werd vaak op de voet gevolgd door toenemende overheidsbemoeiing, wat meestal ook leidde tot uitbreiding van het wegennet. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
