Bahasa Indonesia: Negatif. Perkampungan suku Manggarai bernama Tjoembi (Cumbi). Wilayah Manggarai pernah berada di bawah kekuasaan Kesultanan Gowa (abad ke-17), lalu beralih di bawah Kesultanan Bima.Sejak 1924 status Manggarai adalah 'zelfbesturend landschap' (daerah otonom) di bawah pemerintah penjajahan Hindia-Belanda. Bangunan berbentuk tudung adalah rumah tinggal bersama bagi keluarga besar.
Nederlands: Negatief. De Manggaraiers hebben lang onder de heerschappij gestaan van andere staten uit de Archipel. In de 17e eeuw was dit de vorst van Goa (Zuidwest-Celebes) en later die van Bima (op het eiland Soembawa). Pas in 1928 werd de Manggarai een 'zelfbesturend landschap' onder het koloniaal gezag. In de binnenlanden van de Manggarai leefde de bevolking zonder zich veel van de vreemde invloeden aan te trekken. Karakteristiek voor hen is het kegelvormige familiehuis op de foto, waarbij met 'familie' een aantal nauw verwante gezinnen bedoeld wordt (dus wat vroeger een 'grootfamilie' genoemd werd).
