Description
Nederlands: Repronegatief. De stad Bandjermasin was vanwege zijn gunstige ligging haven en hoofdstad geweest van het sultanaat Bandjermasin. Dat rijk was met de Bandjermasinse Oorlog (1859-63) ten ondergegaan en nu was de stad haven en hoofdstad van de Residentie Borneo's Zuider- en Oosterafdeling. De stad beheerste de in- en uitvoerhandel over de rivier de Barito die diep doordrong in het achterland. Verder was het ook de stapelplaats voor de handel met andere delen van Borneo. Belangrijk was de handel in en de markt (pasar) voor 'kleedjes' (kain) oftewel textiel, die door de gemeente gereguleerd was. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
