Nederlands: Negatief. De eerste spoorlijn, een deel van het traject Semarang-Vorstenlanden, werd in 1867 geopend. Zo'n tien jaar later werd de lijn Soerabaja-Malang aangelegd die vervolgens werd doorgetrokken naar Blitar. Aldus werd de ontginning van een toen nog zwaar beboste streek versneld en de trek van arbeid van dicht- naar dunbevolkte streken bevorderd. De aanleg van de spoorwegen betekende ook een stimulans voor het gebruik van vrije arbeid in plaats van herendienstplichtigen. De vraag naar grote hoeveelheden goed getrainde arbeiders die nodig waren bij deze projecten was onverenigbaar met steeds wisselende groepen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
