Nederlands: Negatief. Smeden (ijzersmeden) hadden bij bijna alle samenlevingen van de Archipel een bijzondere status. Daarbij moet dan wel in de eerste plaats aan wapensmeden, in het bijzonder krissensmeden, gedacht worden. Hoewel er op sommige plaatsen in de Archipel, zoals Celebes, redelijk wat ijzer in de grond zat, was goed ijzer tamelijk zeldzaam toen de eerste Nederlanders rond 1600 op het toneel verschenen. Ook op Nias, waar alle ijzer en staal geïmporteerd moesten worden, waren ijzersmeden lieden van hoge status, zelfs vaak van adel.
