Nederlands: Foto. Grootschalige exploitatie van Borneo's regenwoud voor de export van tropisch hardhout naar Japan, Europa en de Verenigde Staten is vandaag de dag één van de grote zorgen van de internationale organisaties voor natuurbescherming. Vóór de Tweede Wereldoorlog was de productie van hardhout voor de uitvoer niet iets dat op grote schaal plaatsvond. Doorgaans was alleen de exploitatie van de bossen langs de rivieren lonend, omdat de kosten te hoog waren voor het uitslepen van stammen uit verder weg gelegen bossen. De op de foto afgebeelde houtzagerij werkte met een spanzaag, op dat moment zeker niet de meest geavanceerde technologie, maar evenmin de meest primitieve. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
