Onder veel volken van de Archipel was het de gewoonte om het menselijk lichaam op diverse punten blijvend te bewerken. Het veilen van tanden en het doorboren en uitrekken van oorlelletjes zijn daar voorbeelden van. Een ander voorbeeld is tatoeage. Bij de Kajans (foto) werden alle vrouwen uitvoerig getatoeëerd op hun handen, armen, dijen en voeten. Dit was een langdurig proces dat begon in hun vroege tienerjaren en dat zelden voltooid was voor ze een paar kinderen hadden. Elke stand had zijn eigen motieven.
