Nederlands: Foto. In 1940 was nog 66% van de hele Archipel met bos bedekt. Sumatra zat daar met 61% net iets onder. Bij een bevolkingsdichtheid van 17 mensen per vierkante kilometer bevond Sumatra zich tussen Java (24% bos, 316 mensen per vierkante kilometer) en Borneo (77% bos, 4 mensen per vierkante kilometer). Vooral sinds de komst van plantages vanaf ongeveer 1870 was het tempo van ontbossing toegenomen. Overigens was niet alle bos oerbos, of, zoals men tegenwoordig wel zegt, primair bos. Veel landbouw was wat men wel zwerflandbouw noemt (en indertijd vaak nogal denigrerend roofbouw), waarbij een gekapt stuk bos weer na een paar jaar verlaten wordt.
