Nederlands: Foto. Een paar jaar na de NHM werd de Javasche Bank (DJB) opgericht, in 1828. Het was een particuliere instelling, maar de bank kreeg van de koloniale overheid het monopolie op de uitgifte van fiducair geld, oftewel bankbiljetten. Dat is in veel landen de functie van de centrale bank en men kan zeggen dat DJB als centrale bank voor Indië optrad, zonder ten volle een centrale bank te zijn. Het Indische geldstelsel was onlosmakelijk met het Nederlandse verbonden, zodat de controle op het geldstelsel bij het moederland berustte en de Javasche Bank daarop geen invloed kon uitoefenen. Daarnaast verleende DJB kredieten en verdisconteerde wissels als elke andere particuliere bank. Bank Indonesia heeft gebouw en functie van DJB overgenomen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
