Nederlands: Negatief. Met bijna 5 inwoners per km² in 1920 was het eiland Ceram iets dichter bevolkt dan het naburige Boeroe (1½). In vergelijking met het eilandje Ambon, dat 75 inwoners per km² telde, stelde dit alles natuurlijk niets voor. Het gezag van de VOC over Ceram beperkte zich tot wat dorpen aan de kust en ook het koloniaal bestuur had er niet veel te vertellen. De bevolking was nog grotendeels 'heidens' (animisten) en leefde van jacht, visserij en 'zwerflandbouw'. In 1907 werd er een Assistent-Resident gevestigd die moest proberen de 'Alfoeren' of 'berg-heidenen' te onderwerpen, maar nog in 1919 werden er 6 politiedienaren vermoord in Seliha, waarna de inwoners naar de bergen vluchtten (foto).
