Nederlands: Het weven kent een lange traditie bij de Kuba. Vermoedelijk werd het in de 17de eeuw geïntroduceerd door de Pende, de zuidwestelijke buren. Ook Westerse patronen deden toen al hun intrede.
De Kuba bedienen zich hoofdzakelijk van een abstracte, geometrische vormentaal. Kuba decoreren alles in hun omgeving, tot en met hun lichaam. Kuba textiel is wereldwijd vermaard. Dat geldt voor de kleinere doeken, de zogenoemde , het kasai fluweel, waarvan het Tropenmuseum een aantal voorbeelden in de collectie heeft. Daarnaast maken de Kuba ceremoniële dansrokken, verbonden aan publieke ceremonies. Vroeger werden maandelijkse rituele feesten gehouden. Er werd gedanst bij de aanstelling of begrafenis van hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, tijdens de oogst, or ter herdenking van een bepaalde gebeurtenis (Oei, 1989:21). Tegenwoordig worden de grote doeken in steeds grotere hoeveelheden gemaakt voor de buitenlandse markt, waarbij de decoratie steeds excessiever wordt. |
