Nederlands: Foto. Met ruim 50.000 inwoners was Padang in 1930 de derde stad van Sumatra. Met Padang hadden de Nederlanders veel oudere en intensievere contacten gehad dan met Medan, waar rond 1870 nog niets te vinden was. Padang was rond 1600 al een 'stad', zij het van zeer bescheiden afmetingen. Daar stond tegenover dat de groei van Padang na 1870 duidelijk achterbleef bij die van Medan, zodat Medan Padang al in 1920 had ingehaald. Het bleef echter een belangrijke stad met een grote economische, etnische, culturele en architectonische verscheidenheid. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
