Nederlands: Negatief. Naast landbouw, veeteelt en visserij verschafte ook de bosbouw werk aan veel Javanen. Er werd door de ambtenaren, die de bosbouw in goede banen moesten leiden, een onderscheid gemaakt tussen jati of teak enerzijds en al het overige, kortweg 'wildhout' genoemd anderzijds. Onder de VOC was de exploitatie van de jatibossen in principe een monopolie van de Compagnie geweest. Daendels had dit monopolie nog aangescherpt, maar Raffles had aan particulieren aankap op licentie toegestaan. Gedurende het grootste deel van de 19e eeuw werd beheer door de staat gecombineerd met exploitatie door particulieren. Echter vlak voor 1900 werd in principe voor staatsexploitatie gekozen. (P.
