Nederlands: Negatief.
(P. Verger, 2001).
English: Funeral procession for cremation of Goesti Djilantik in Karangasem. Comment: The Hindu people of Bali had (and still have) a particular position in the archipelago. Hinduism and Buddhism had once had great influences on Java, but were banned following the victory of the Muslim rulers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Bali became a refuge for the Javanese do not wish to live under the rule of Muslim leaders. Cremation was a costly act, especially for Hindu dignitaries whose families were ritually sacrificing a rhinoceros. But for the cremation ceremony of this photo, the family was granted an exemption from by the Governor General, since the species was at that time already protected on the island. (P. Verger, 2001). |
