Nederlands: Armband, onderdeel van een paar dat gedragen werd door Berbervrouwen uit de westelijke Anti-Atlas. Gezien de gebruikte technieken en motieven is dit paar armbanden vervaardigd in Ifrane (Anti-Atlas). Ifrane was een belangrijk handelscentrum en karavaanknooppunt met een voornamelijk joodse bevolking.
De armbanden waren onderdeel van het bezit van een vrouw. De traditie in Marokko wilde dat sieraden van generatie op generatie, van moeder op dochter, werden overerfd. De toekomstige bruid kreeg in haar uitzet altijd sieraden mee. Naast de gebruiks- en sierfunctie dienden deze sieraden nog een ander, economisch, doel. Men bewaarde ze om in situaties van financiële nood te kunnen verkopen of te ruilen. In families van landbouwers en nomaden die vaak in moeilijke omstandigheden leefden, werd het bezit van sieraden gezien als een manier om te sparen. In goede tijden, wanneer de oogst bijvoorbeeld goed was, werden sieraden gekocht die in slechte tijden kunnen worden verkocht of geruild om in het levensonderhoud te kunnen voorzien of schulden af te lossen. Deze manier van omgang met sieraden (sparen, kopen, verkopen en ruilen), was vroeger algemeen gangbaar. Tegenwoordig komt dit nog maar weinig voor omdat de traditionele sieraden in grote mate vervangen worden door goud (info 2004). Daarnaast heeft de nomadische levenswijze plaats gemaakt voor een sedentair bestaan en heeft men ook vaak andere bronnen van inkomsten. Maar ondanks de economische en socio-culturele veranderingen worden de traditionele sieraden nog steeds bij speciale gelegenheden gedragen en worden zij nog steeds als een kostbaar en waardevol bezit gezien (Grammet 1998: 216). De aankoop van dit sieraad is mogelijk gemaakt door het aankoopfonds Volkenkundige Collectie/Mondriaan Stichting en BankGiro Loterij. |
