Discussion: The four silver coins (siliquae) in this group span the reigns of the Emperors Constantius II (AD 337-361), to Honorius (AD393-423), spanning the time period AD 359 to 402. All the coins are clipped to varying extents, a phenomenon not commonly observed in the silver coins of Roman Britain except at the very end of the occupation (Moorhead and Walton, 2014, 101-102). Although there is some disagreement about the exact year this practice becomes common it appears to commence in the first decade of the 5th Century until c. AD430 when Roman Coinage ceases to be in common circulation. This suggests the coins were probably deposited between AD395 and AD430. Conclusion: It is therefore clear that this hoard contains more than 2 silver coins over 300 years old from the same find and thus constitutes potential Treasure under the stipulations of The Treasure Act 1996. |
