Summary
[edit]DescriptionCOASTAL TRANSGRESSION-REGRESSION SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHY.png | General scheme (not to scale) illustrating the migration of depositional facies in transgressive and regressive phases of sea level within an ideal subsurface stratigraphic sequence. The facies maps for the depositional units corresponding to times T3, T5 and T7 are depicted. At time T3 we have the maximum of marine transgression (late Transgressive System Tract), and the coastal marine facies are in the innermost position towards the continent; the upper surface of this unit is an maximum flooding s surface. At time T5 we are in a regressive phase in which the beach facies (and coastline) have moved seaward: we are in an Hightand Synstem Tract. The units corresponding to times T7-T8 are deposited on the coast during an abrupt lowering of the sea level (forced regression) and correspond towards land to an erosion surface (subaerial unconformity); landwards, during this time we will have predominantly non-deposition, with the exception of valleys incised by streams in which fluvial and deltaic sediments may accumulate. The incised channel above the erosion surface will belong to time-units T7-T8, although laterally it is contiguous with the beach facies of unit T6. At the base of unit T7 we have the basal surface of forced regression (BSFR), corresponding to a Sequence Boundary. |
