Vereinfachte Darstellung von Geschichte und Zukunft der Kohlendioxid-Konzentration in der Atmosphäre Der linke Teil des Diagramms zeigt auf einer logarithmischen Skala die letzten 100 Millionen Jahre. Die heutige CO2-Konzentration ist mit 380 ppm (2006) bereits höher als während der letzten 2 Millionen Jahre. Die rechte Seite des Diagramms hat auf einer linearen Skala die nächsten 300 Jahre aufgetragen. Auch die Ordinate hat eine nicht-lineare Skala mit einem CO2-Wertebereich von 0 bis 5000 ppm (parts per million). Die CO2-Konzentrationen während der Kreide (> 60 Million Jahre) waren deutlich höher als heute. Parallel mit den Temperaturen nahmen sie im Tertiär ab (60-2 Millionen Jahre) während das Klima sich bis zum aktuellen Eiszeitalter abkühlte. Das Quartär ist charakterisiert durch Klimavariationen während der letzten 2 Millionen Jahre. Der in die Zukunft weisende Pfeil zeigt die weitere natürliche Entwicklung. Der schnelle Anstieg von CO2, wie er für die nächsten 300 Jahre vorhergesagt wird, ist die Folge der ständig steigenden Verbrennung fossiler Kohlenwasserstoffe durch die Menschheit, die mit dem Industriezeitalter begann. Die Fläche mit dem Fragezeichen kennzeichnet den Bereich möglicher zukünftiger Entwicklungen in der CO2-Konzentration. |
