Description

It should read 'mm' NOT 'MM' & cm should NOT be 'CM' !! Such manufacturer incompetence only serves to confuse. This is one way to cause misunderstanding amongst students!!

I think the markings on this end of the plastic ruler are the best of the four shots I have posted. However, they are still in serious error!! It has MM marked next to the millimeter markings and CM next to the centimeter markings. BUT here's my beef -

M as a metric prefix stands for mega. Mega is a prefix that means multiply times 1,000,000! m as a prefix means milli, or divide by 1,000!! So m and M differ by a magnitude of 1,000,000,000!!

In this case the graduation markings are 1/1000 of a meter, so the prefix should be m.

m as the second letter means meter. The correct abbreviation would be mm, not MM! Similarly, C is not a prefix in the metric system, as far as I know. It is an abbreviation used for Celsius or Centigrade. The abbreviation for centi is c and it means divide by 100, or 1/100. So the abbreviation for centimeter should be cm not CM
